New Stakeholders

UK institutions are increasingly seeing complaints from parents as well as students (who can be highly embarrassed by such interference). From 2006, with tuition fees coming out of family budgets rather than government funds in the United Kingdom, increasing pressure has been put on universities to provide services of an even higher standard. What students might once have put up with, their parents (who see themselves as stakeholders) increasingly will not. Universities are now seeing demands for refunds when a lecture is cancelled and for compensation when a student is not awarded the degree they believe is deserved. Sometimes students do not give their parents the full story and blame their institution for poor teaching when in fact their failure might have been due to a lack of attendance and application. It can be difficult for parents to discover that their son or daughter has been ‘economical with the truth’, but even more difficult to understand that after their child’s 18th birthday they become ‘a third party’ in the United Kingdom under data protection legislation and are no longer entitled to any information about exam results or attendance. This can lead to very complex and sensitive situations that are difficult for universities to manage.
